A dog, once bound to a bicycle and made to run until she collapsed, is now in a caring environment. This white Pit Bull, named Penelope, endured not just being dragged by heartless individuals but was also reportedly assaulted when she could no longer stand, left for dead. Fortunately, compassionate bystanders came to her rescue and contacted Detroit Dog Rescue (DDR) for assistance.

Upon rescuing her, the team at Detroit Dog Rescue quickly transported her to a veterinary clinic. “She came in with visible bruising, severe dehydration, and a spirit that seems to be fading,” the organization shared on social media.
“She’s putting up a brave fight, but is facing tremendous challenges,” the rescue added after discovering that Penelope also had an infected uterus and tested positive for heartworms. “After being forced to run until she fell, she appeared to have been abused and abandoned.”

“Penelope has endured numerous litters of puppies in a brief period, raising significant worries about her uterus,” shared Detroit Dog Rescue. “Her situation is critical, and surgery may be necessary to address the neglect she has faced throughout her life. The presence of heartworm adds to the complexities, leading our medical team and Kristina to opt for an echocardiogram today. We will provide updates as we learn more.”

Penelope’s past may involve being a breeding dog for an unlicensed breeder or possibly a victim in dog fights.
After spending a weekend in critical care, she’s nearing the time for a transition to foster care. The dedicated team at Detroit Dog Rescue is also on the hunt for those responsible for her abuse, urging anyone with information to step forward.
According to DDR, “She has a challenging journey ahead, yet her resilience and spirit make us incredibly proud.”

Several months following her rescue in June 2017, Penelope has transformed into a whole new dog.
“Looks like Penelope is pulling some funny faces and having a blast instead of focusing on her training with Kate,” DDR shared in a recent update.

After a lengthy journey, Penelope has finally found her loving family. DDR remarked, “After a year dedicated to healing her physical and emotional wounds, we celebrated as Penelope was officially adopted. Go shine, Penelope!”
