A dog, once tethered to a bicycle and made to run until she could no longer move, is now in a place of safety.
The white Pit Bull, affectionately renamed Penelope, suffered not just from being dragged by heartless individuals but also endured abuse when she couldn’t continue, left to perish.
Fortunately, kind-hearted bystanders came to her rescue, swiftly reaching out to Detroit Dog Rescue (DDR) for assistance.
Detroit Dog Rescue’s Urgent Mission
When the team at Detroit Dog Rescue found her, they acted quickly, taking her straight to the veterinarian.
“She’s showing signs of bruising, is severely dehydrated, and her spirit seems low. We’re currently administering fluids and uncovering her backstory,” the rescue group shared on social media.
“Despite her struggles, she’s battling through numerous challenges,” they continued, revealing that Penelope was also dealing with an infected uterus and had tested positive for heartworm.
“After being pushed to her limits, she was allegedly beaten and left to die, leaving her utterly drained.”

“Penelope has endured numerous litters in a brief span, raising significant worries regarding her uterus,” stated Detroit Dog Rescue. “She may need surgery to address the neglect she has suffered throughout her life. The presence of heartworm adds to the complexity, prompting our medical team and Kristina to proceed with an echocardiogram today. We’ll ensure everyone is kept updated.”

Penelope’s past may have involved a life as a breeding dog for a casual breeder or, even worse, being a victim of dog fighting.
After spending a critical weekend in care, Penelope is now on the verge of leaving the hospital for a loving foster home. The dedicated team at Detroit Dog Rescue is also actively working to track down the individuals responsible for her abuse. They encourage anyone with information to reach out.
According to DDR, “Penelope may face a difficult journey ahead, but her resilience and spirit are truly inspiring.”
Update:
Just a few months post-rescue in June 2017, Penelope has transformed into an entirely new dog.
“Looks like Penelope is having a little fun instead of focusing on her training with Kate,” the DDR update mentioned.

After a lengthy journey, Penelope has finally found her forever family. DDR remarked, “After a year dedicated to overcoming her physical and emotional scars, there were tears of joy when Penelope was adopted. Go shine, Penelope!”
