A dog is on the mend after being discovered trapped in a wire crate atop a pickup truck outside a motel in Cobb County, Georgia. The poor animal endured this ordeal for over 10 hours, with outdoor temperatures soaring into the 90s.
When authorities arrived, they recorded an astonishing 122 degrees (50 degrees Celsius) on the plastic crate’s floor. The pit bull mix was found in pain, suffering from burns on his paws and struggling to stand.
Officers tracked down the dog’s owners, Ebony Newell and Reginald Weems, who were found asleep in the motel. Both were charged with animal cruelty, while Weems faces several additional charges related to drugs and firearms.
The dog was taken to Cobb County Animal Services for a thorough examination and treatment for his injuries. Officials report a concerning trend this summer, with around a dozen incidents of dogs being left in hot cars.
Many of these cases involve pets abandoned outside motels, as they are not permitted inside. Animal Services urges pet owners to remember that vehicles, truck beds, and crates can heat up rapidly, and emphasizes the importance of calling 911 if anyone spots an animal in distress.
