Actually I came across this when my cousin converted her garage for her two labs, and I literally stood there with my mouth open. It looked like something off your Pinterest board (and her house? Spotless).
We finally got a bright moment of inspiration on the garage. We realized it could be used for something other than an empty space. The garage could be a blank canvas just waiting to be the dog room of your dreams.

#1: Indoor Dog Kennel Room With Metal Enclosure Panels
My golden retriever has that one spot on my couch that she’s claimed as her throne and I love her for it, so I don’t think anything about it. But I also love my linen cushions.
This guy’s garage is giving off a very luxurious vibe. Black powder-coated steel grid panels form a large open kennel, with a cathedral-style arch frame overhead. Multiple dog beds can be seen inside, including a round gray bolster bed, a red plastic raised basin bed, and a yellow memory foam mattress in the back corner.
To create the same look, purchase welded wire mesh panels, (4ft x 6ft sections) and connect with a steel tube frame welded or bolted at the corners. The arch top not only adds some cuteness to the area, but also provides more stability without having to attach the frame to a ceiling. In these beds, the waterproof plastic basin beds are mixed with plush bolster options so your girl can choose to spend some time in her mood.
Real talk: paint the steel frame matte black before assembling. it won’t rust and it looks a thousand times better than the raw metal.
Lay large-format terracotta or beige tiles underneath it – they stay cool to touch in summer and can be wiped clean in seconds. A good floor in the kennel will keep your dog comfy whilst you are out. I think this is one of the best looking structured dog room setups I’ve seen. I like the white, light maple interlocking floor tiles, the cream walls, and the chain-link dog kennel enclosure in the back of the room. It’s a good dog room, but it doesn’t look cluttered.
To recreate this in your own home you will need to grab a couple of these interlocking EVA foam or vinyl wood-look tiles (these are easy on paws and simple to mop). The kennel is made with a standard galvanized chain-link dog run panel set (10 x 10 ft). The wall mounted unit on the right is a through the wall HVAC unit, which means your pup can be kept comfortable year-round.
Finally, I mounted the garage door opener cables high and ran a baseboard seal strip along every wall edge. Dog noses find every crack.
The reflective foil insulation on the ceiling keeps this space cool in summer and warm in winter without a full renovation, just staple it between exposed beams.

To build this, you will need 1.5-inch black metal balusters (welded or bolted in a rectangular frame), a top border and base made from 2×6 pine lumber, and a latch-style door that swings open on one side. It will feature a heavy-duty sliding bolt latch. The surface of the top of the table must be at least 24 inches deep (a real usable work bench).
It is always a good idea to pour a concrete floor sealant underneath the kennel before building the base. This will help prevent the wood base from warping after a while due to moisture.
Bolt it down to the wall studs for extra stability. That way, your girl can’t knock it over and it will still look nice. It doesn’t look like a dog jail!

It’s giving me such a spa luxury vibe today with all the warm taupe walls and the geometric hexagon pattern. And can you believe there is a crystal chandelier? And I’ll be honest that dog bed looks better than some of the human living rooms I’ve been in.
Start with two dark chocolate brown bucket chairs for your golden to sprawl across. Add a chaise lounge in matching brown upholstery. Your golden comes in from the backyard, paws soaked, and heads straight for her spot. No chaos. No “get off the couch.” Just her space, waiting for her.
I must say that I was really really pleased with how these kennel suites looked inside. They are snugly tucked under our plywood loft platform and they create cozy little sleeping pods. In addition to the sleeping area, there is a toilet, a sink and a standing tub. I also really like how easy the muddy paws are to clean off of the epoxy terrazzo flooring in speckled gray. I didn’t think anything could make our garage warm and cozy, but the string lights do a good job.
Each of the kennel units has steel bar doors with heavy-duty corner brackets mounted to painted MDF or cabinet-grade plywood walls. Inside each pod there is a round bolster dog bed sitting on a washable flat mat (both easy to swap on laundry day), and one pod also has a stainless steel floor bowl bolted to the base.
That detail is the one I’m stealing.
Make it even easier: cut your kennel wall to 24 inches tall so it will tuck under your standard 4 foot loft deck. This is high enough for most medium and large breeds and still gives you storage space above the deck.
Paint the insides flat white so each pod feels bigger and you can see when it needs a wipe down.

Your golden retriever has come inside, soaking wet, smelling like the outdoors, and leaving muddy paw prints on your clean floor. You are thinking to yourself, “not again.”

#7: Build a Dedicated Insulated Dog Room Inside Your Garage
Your golden is soaking wet from the backyard, shaking all the water off everywhere, and you have nowhere to send her that isn’t also your living room. That moment is what made me pause when I first saw this.
This setup is basically a little room-within-a-room built inside our garage. The walls are OSB (oriented strand board), the outside surface of which is smooth and looks like plywood, and 2×4 pine stud framing. The foam boards (the pink stuff you can see peeking out from under the door) are rigid insulation boards that keep the little room cozy warm in the winter without heating up the rest of the garage. The door opens wide, so my dog comes inside as if she owns the place!
To replicate the look of a dark floor, you need 3/4″ OSB panels, 2″ pink XPS foam board, 2×4 lumber, and regular framing hardware. The floor gets a layer of brown subfloor sheeting, which makes it easy to mop and is “no carpet” drama.
And if you add a cozy pallet dog bed on the inside, your dog will have a bedroom to call her own.
Make the door opening 36 inches wide so bigger dogs can pass through easily. Seal the edges of the foam board with construction adhesive before closing the wall around the door – exposed foam can be chewed and crumbles easily.

The Garage Floor Mistake That’ll Cost You Way More Than You Think
Apparently, one of the worst things for a dogs’ skin is a concrete floor. Before you start the dog room in the garage project, you should cover the concrete with some kind of protective coating. I’ve learned a lot in the last few weeks.
I learned this lesson the hard way with my aunt. Her set up completely fell apart in a season. The concrete wicked the moisture up through her dog’s bed and made the whole house smell like wet dog and gave her girl joint problems from sleeping on something so unforgiving.
10. Lay interlocking rubber floor tiles BEFORE you put a single piece of furniture in there.
Not just any mat. Thick, interlocking rubber tiles meant for garage use. These keep my feet a bit off of the cold concrete. They are waterproof, so if my golden inevitably drags mud in from the yard, I can pop them up and hose them down.
Common mistake: I spent $400 on a cute dog bed and $0 on the floor under it. What’s wrong with this picture?
Why not include a wall mounted water bowl so the bowls do not slide around and the dog can drink comfortably. This is actually a nice and neat set-up for the dog’s body, not just your Pinterest board.
