Ingredients:
- 8 oz raw beef (cubed, human-grade)
- 3 strawberries (sliced)
- ¼ cup blueberries
- 2 Brussels sprouts (halved)
- 2 cucumber slices
- 1 carrot (cut into sticks)
- 2 quail eggs
- Handful of microgreens or sprouts
- 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- Pinch of ground flaxseed
Instructions:
4. Cube raw beef into bite-sized pieces. Wash and chop all fruits and vegetables. Crack quail eggs on top. Put it all in the bowl and sprinkle seeds on top. Serve!
The Details:
- Prep time: 8 minutes
- No cooking required
- Cost: $3.50 per serving
- Yield: 1 large serving (adjust portions for your dog’s weight)
Your dog gets enzymes and nutrients that cooking kills, so YOU CAN see shinier fur and cleaner teeth in 3-4 weeks, which means LESS vet cleanings and a coat that strangers stop to compliment. The variety keeps mealtime exciting—no more bored stares at the same kibble.
Keep ingredients organized in this Food Storage Container Airtight for easy meal assembly. Serve in a Ceramic Slow Feed Bowl to make the experience last longer.
Pro tip: Mix it up with the proteins (beef, turkey, salmon) once a week and you’re good to go. Freeze quail eggs in an ice cube tray and use them as needed.
Okay, so if you are moving from kibble to fresh food then use this balanced homemade dog food recipe so you don’t get a tummy ache.

4. Ground Turkey, Sweet Potato & Kale Bowl (Antioxidant-Packed, Immune Boosting)
I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me. I was in a state where I didn’t even have the brain capacity to think. The sweet potato gets fork-tender as the turkey browns and it looks fancy in its bright orange color. But it only took 20 minutes!

Keep this Portable Kibble Storage Bag in your pantry for easy ingredient organization.

5. Rainbow Raw Bowl with Salmon & Beef (Omega-Rich, Fresh Food Variety)
This is the bowl that made me never buy kibble again. Luna had never seen anything like it before. When she first saw this she was so still I thought she was broken. The colors, the textures, the smell. It’s everything her ancestors would have hunted.
Ingredients:
- 6 oz raw salmon (cubed, sushi-grade)
- 4 oz raw beef (cubed, human-grade)
- 1 thick slice butternut squash (steamed 5 minutes)
- 4 strawberries (sliced)
- ¼ cup blueberries
- 2 Brussels sprouts (halved)
- 3 cucumber slices
- 2 quail eggs (raw or soft-boiled)
- Small handful of microgreens or alfalfa sprouts
- 1 tsp ground flaxseed
- Pinch of hemp seeds
Instructions:
Cut the proteins into bite-sized pieces. Steam the butternut squash for 5 minutes (it should still have a little bite). Wash and prep all the fruits and veggies. Serve everything sectioned in your dog’s bowl. Crack quail eggs on top. Sprinkle with seeds and greens. Serve at room temp.
The Details:
- Prep time: 12 minutes
- Cook time: 5 minutes (squash only)
- Cost: $4.10 per serving
- Yield: 1 large serving (adjust portions based on your dog’s weight)
Omega-3s in salmon can help reduce inflammation and clear up skin issues so you can stop itching forever (no more 2am scratching frenzies that wake the whole house). Switching proteins can help prevent food sensitivities.
Serve this gorgeous meal in an Adjustable Height Feeder that grows with your pup and protects their neck.
Pro tip: Go to the fish market and get some sushi-grade fish from the seafood counter and ask them to cube it for you. Freeze your quail eggs in an ice cube tray and they’ll be ready to thaw in 10 minutes.

How to Transition Your Dog to Homemade Food
Never just cold turkey your dog. I tried the overnight and cleaned up diarrhea at 3am (lesson learned the hard way with my beagle).
The 7-Day Transition Plan:
Day 1-2: Mix 25% new food with 75% old food. Watch for loose stools or gas.
Day 3-4: 50/50. Your dog will probably be eating the kibble to get to the treats.
5-6 days: 75% homemade, 25% old food. Most dogs will be ok with this.
Day 7: Go 100% homemade. Celebrate—you did it.
If your dog has a sensitive stomach, that could be 10-14 days. No prize for speed.
Shortcut the transition: If you’re nervous about ratios, use the JustFoodForDogs Pantry Fresh meals (shelf stable, no freezer necessary, vet formulated) for the first week while you learn. Then once your dog’s tummy adjusts you can go to your own batches.
What Normal Looks Like:
Don’t panic if your dog’s stool changes slightly. The food you’re making at home is actual food, not filler, so you’ll get smaller, firmer poops. If you see blood or diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours, or vomiting, slow down the transition.
Maybe you have noticed that your dog is drinking less water? That’s okay. That is normal when switching from dry kibble to wet fresh food. No problem.
Pro tip: The first 2 weeks, jot down what you feed, how much and what the poop looks like (sorry, gross, but if something goes wrong, you can see patterns).
What about portions? We’ll show you how much to feed your dog according to their weight in our balanced homemade dog food guideline. If your dog is picky, check out our homemade dog food for picky eaters tips.
Week 1 – you will be terrible. Week 2 – you will wonder why you didn’t do this sooner.
Storing and Serving Homemade Dog Food
Time saver: Unless you throw away rotten food 3 days later. Here’s how to keep everything fresh without turning your fridge into a chemistry lab.
Storage Rules:
Storage: Fridge: 5 days max. I label everything with the date I made it, because by day 4, everything looks the same. 3 recipes and 300 blog posts…
Freezer storage extends shelf life to 3 months. Portion meals into single servings before freezing. I use these Silicone Muffin Pans for Freezing—each cup holds one meal portion for a 40-50 lb dog.
8. Don’t re-freeze thawed food. Your dog has an amazing immune system, but that doesn’t mean you should test it.
Serving Temperature:
Room temp is fine. Take the chilled food out of the fridge 30 minutes before you feed or heat in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and stir. Check with your finger. It should be just barely warm, never hot.
Cold food from the fridge can also upset their stomachs if they’re sensitive. 5 minutes to warm their food can prevent an afternoon of cleaning.
A Collapsible Silicone Travel Bowl is perfect for serving thawed portions—it’s microwave-safe and folds flat for storage.
Pro tip: Freeze bone broth in ice cube trays. Add one to a meal for flavor and hydration. Kid will never know you’re sneaking in the moisture!
If you’re feeding multiple pets, you can use this homemade dog food for large dogs to feed twice as many dogs without doubling the time!
Common Mistakes to Avoid with Homemade Dog Food
You’ve prepared the dish yourself, don’t spoil it with these 5 mistakes that even the most experienced home cook can’t avoid.
Mistake #1: Skipping Calcium Supplements
No kidding. Ground meat doesn’t have enough calcium. Your dog needs about 1 gram of calcium per pound of food. Don’t do this and your dog’s bones weaken over months and you don’t notice until he limps after a walk.
Add crushed eggshell powder (sterilized in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes), fish oil , or a vet-approved supplement. If you’re worried about hitting all nutritional targets, Just Food For Dogs meals are formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists and exceed AAFCO guidelines —zero guesswork required.
Mistake #2: Cooking Everything to Death
If you boil veggies for 30 minutes you kill half of the nutrients. Steam them for 5-8 minutes or serve them raw and small enough that your dog can’t choke on them.
A goal is not hard to chew on, but not too hard to chew.
Mistake #3: Using Toxic Ingredients Without Knowing It
10. Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocado, chocolate — check every ingredient. Read your vegetable scraps before you put them in the pot.
No grape isn’t going to kill your dog but it adds up. Watch them.
Mistake #4: Not Rotating Proteins
If you feed your chicken every day for a year, it will become allergic. Try turkey, beef, salmon, and lamb every week to avoid food sensitivities and keep things exciting.
Your dog won’t get bored—he’ll stay healthier.
Mistake #5: Forgetting About Portion Control
Homemade food is fattening. One cup of your turkey stew has more calories than one cup of kibble. Fats dogs get fat fast.
A general rule: Feed 2-3% of your dog’s body weight per day. That’s 1-1.5 pounds of food for a 50 pound dog. Adjust as needed based on your dog’s activity level and weight.
Pro tip: Weigh your dog monthly. If he’s gaining, cut portions by 10%. If he’s losing, add more. A food scale is your friend.
