For nearly six years, Officer Joel Nitchman and his K9 partner, Roni, have faced numerous challenges together. So, when a fierce storm hit, there was no question in his mind about rescuing Roni from the perilous situation.
On January 24, 2023, Nitchman bravely ventured into a tornado in Deer Park, Texas, to save Roni from their patrol vehicle. Captured on a now-famous surveillance video, he can be seen defying the storm as he rushes from the police station to his van.
With lightning illuminating the sky and debris swirling around him, Nitchman pushed forward. “I realized it was serious when debris started hitting my face,” he recounted. “By the time I reached the car, things escalated quickly. I struggled to open the door, and Roni, being smart, sensed the chaos and refused to come out.”
Yet, fearing the van could flip over, Nitchman managed to encourage his loyal companion to exit. With visibility nearly zero, he understood the urgency of getting both of them back inside.
Though many are celebrating his courageous actions, Nitchman remains humble. He shared with KHOU-11, “I love that dog. He’s practically my shadow. He’s part of our family. Leaving him behind was simply not an option.”
