The Harness Sizing Mistake That’s Actually Hurting Your Dog
Okay, for some reason this took me way too long to figure out. Wish someone had told me sooner.
Most people will try to size their dog’s harness by weight. This is usually a big mistake. It doesn’t matter how much your dog weighs – it’s all about the girth. That is, how wide the chest is behind the front legs.
I learned this the hard way with my neighbor’s golden, Biscuit. After months of wearing a “correctly sized” harness, she developed weird shoulder tension. After reviewing the straps, my neighbor’s vet determined that the straps were hitting the wrong muscle group every time Biscuit went on a walk.
Some riders put a finger under each strap, while others make sure that two fingers slide under every strap. The chest plate should sit flat, not riding up toward the throat.
Also, Goldens are a bit broader through the chest than most dogs their weight, so always buy one size larger from the recommendation on the chart and adjust from there.
Getting that right makes a difference for both of you.
