So I’m sitting here thinking about why the idea of this set stopped me in my tracks when I first saw it. Okay, so you know that moment where your dog is so excited that they are jumping in circles and you just kinda stand there not knowing what to do? That was me every morning with my cousin’s lab mix. It was so annoying every day and I wanted to get out of it after two days.

This past spring, I was that mom whose dog was trying to pull to every squirrel in the park, and the harness I bought off Amazon was sliding all over the place. It was just too much, and I was DONE.

The Leather Break-In Secret That Most Dog Owners Learn Too Late
… Mind you, I’ve never gotten a leather harness off the rack and used it straight away. Apparently, I am supposed to do that, but it’s just not what happened.
Most people would buckle their dog on it, walk outside, and end up with a dog who’s uncomfortable and pulling weird because the leather’s still stiff. Raw leather needs to be moved and flexed before it molds to your dog’s body.
A word to the wise: if you’re going to use this saddle right away, before the first ride put a small amount of coconut oil on the leather panels and let it sit over night. This helps soften up the material and will help the saddle break in after a few rides (not a few months).
One thing to remember, and this is quite obvious, is to check all the rings and buckles on the leather harness for any cheap hardware. Those rings are what holds up the harness, and the stitching near the D ring clips is where most of the tension on the harness is put on every time you take the dog for a walk.
Good news: Once a leather harness is broken in and fitted right, it’ll outlast three cheap nylon ones. Your girl will look gorgeous, and feel comfortable. It’s a win-win situation.
