Upon their arrival, they spotted flames erupting from the back of the residence. Concerned for any occupants, Investigators Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard forced their way in, as detailed by the Aurora Police Department on social media. Inside, amidst the thick smoke, they discovered a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier named Oakley.
Ely extended his hand to guide Oakley outside, but the eager pup took charge, darting from room to room until they reached the back door, where his leash was dangling. Once the leash was secured, Oakley led the way, ensuring both he and Ely exited safely.
The police department shared footage from Ely’s body camera, capturing the heartfelt rescue.

The blaze seems to have been an accident, and thankfully, Oakley was the only one home at the time.
Oakley is doing wonderfully! Following the incident, his family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the officers and shared their love for their adorable pup.
“Oakley is an American Staffordshire Terrier we rescued from a local group, Players for Pits. Our family adopted him as a puppy, and he’s now a lively 4-year-old who adores playing and wrestling. He loves to cuddle with us, snores loudly when he sleeps, enjoys sunbathing, and can’t get enough of peanut butter. We are truly thankful to Mike from the Aurora Police Department for ensuring our sweet dog’s safety.”
Oakley has been officially turned over to the Aurora Police Department.
