What began as a light-hearted conversation among firefighters quickly turned into a heartfelt mission. During a casual chat about getting a station pet, someone suggested, “Why not make this a reality?”
The Liberty Professional Firefighters Association took action and reached out to their Facebook community for feedback. The response was tremendous, and just a week later, they introduced their latest team member: Rescue Rufus.
This was Rufus’s golden opportunity—one he had been longing for throughout his young life. Two years back, the now three-year-old dog was saved from a neglectful situation, arriving at Animal Charities of Ohio in dire need. Despite his charming personality, he spent years in the shelter, watching others find their forever homes while he remained waiting for his turn.
Firefighters often referred to Rufus as the “backup choice.” That all changed recently.
Thanks to the Animal Charities of Ohio, Rufus has found his forever home. They are assisting with his essential needs, veterinary health, training, and continued support to ensure he transitions smoothly into his new surroundings.
Nowadays, Rufus can be found at Station 35, welcoming guests, bonding with the team, and providing solace after tough calls. With a toy in his mouth or a smile radiating from his face, he’s always adding joy to the atmosphere.
Station dogs like Rufus have emerged as vital companions for firefighters nationwide. They play a key role in alleviating stress, boosting morale, and reaffirming that first responders are never isolated in their challenging journeys.
