There are those moments when your golden retriever gives you those big brown eyes, and you just know she deserves the whole world. This happened to me when I saw this. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since then.
Here is my mini dog safe birthday cake on a round wooden cutting board. It’s frosted in pink and has a gold star pattern pressed into the sides. Three wooden skewers hold a few colorful star picks. And of course I had to add my little number “4” candle on top. There are fresh blueberries in the middle and bone shaped dog treats around the bottom like confetti.
And the cake? Made with homemade dog-friendly ingredients (peanut butter, oat flour, and plain yogurt for the frosting. Not a lick of sugar. No xylitol here).
The birthday crown on the pup says “Make a Wish.” You can pick one up at any party supply store or on Amazon for less than $5.
Or, skip the real thing if your dog gets excited too quickly. A battery-operated birthday candle is just as adorable and there is less risk of it tipping over.

Isn’t it funny how your dog always finds the coziest spot in the house to lie down? Mine does the same thing too – just parks herself somewhere pretty and stares at you like she’s posing for a magazine cover.
Yeah so that’s pretty much how I set it up. Just turn it into a birthday.
The nook has a sage green painted built-in bench, with a floral upholstered cushion and flanked by floor to ceiling shaker-style cabinets. A fresh cedar and eucalyptus wreath hangs from the white painted tongue-and-groove paneling, with mercury glass ornaments and a linen Christmas stocking hanging on simple brushed nickel coat hooks.

Your golden is sitting there with her big brown eyes and you’re trying to get ONE good photo of her, and she just won’t cooperate. I know the feeling, I have had that happen with my cousin’s malamute, Koda. The key to that, was dressing the part first, and then the photo happened.
I love this set up – it’s giving full party vibes! There’s a white and pink “Happy Birthday” backdrop with illustrated cakes and confetti, mylar number balloons in magenta and teal, and a low bamboo coffee table with two dog safe cakes on it.
So grab a blue satin “Birthday Boy” sash, a cone party hat with pom-pom trim and a floral crown headband in yellow and blue. The table is set with a two-tier fondant dog cake and a cookie platter with bear-shaped iced treats.

This picture is quite everything! We have a fluffy white Samoyed named Nala wearing a gold grosgrain bow trimmed with white pom-poms and posing right beside a black felt letterboard in a natural wood frame. I love that this sign is very simple yet personal. It makes this party feel so intentional!}
We used a felt letterboard (around 10×10 or 12×12 inches) that you can find on Amazon for under $20. We swapped out the white letter tiles for her name and birthday number. We also purchased a gold ribbon collar bow with trim detail on Etsy. Most sellers on Etsy will custom size the bow and bowties so you can choose a size that fits well around your girl’s neck if she has a super fluffy golden retriever neck like ours!
Set up your camera near your front gate or entry point. No ring light is needed since you are relying on the natural outdoor light. Take your dog’s photos in mid-morning when the light is soft and he or she is calm (before the chaos of guests and cake).
When you have a treat in your closed fist you get happy, tongue-out eyes. And when you have happy, tongue-out eyes you have a picture worth framing.

Picture this: It’s your golden’s birthday, the backyard is full of dogs, and they are all going crazy over the snack table. That’s the same energy this Pup Cup Station brings.
A rainbouw-striped canopy awning hangs above a teal and multi-colour striped table dripping in that carnival-fair look that dogs somehow always gravitate towards. Two little schnoodles in party hats and gingham bandanas are basically the cutest little brand ambassadors you’ve ever seen.

You’re golden is sitting very still wearing his party hat with a dopey grin. The background looks like it was photo shopped from a Pinterest board. This is the type of picture that you would want to take. Your dog deserves all the chaos.
I picked out the cute blue glitter banner, “It’s My Bday Motherpuppers” to go with a gold mylar number balloon (get the number 2 if they’re turning 2) and tied some blue polka dot and some white paw print latex balloons to a command hook. Easy as that.
Lay the cake on a small bamboo serving tray as the base for the table. Put some of my little guests sitting around it wearing their mini party hats. Give your pup a blue bow tie collar and a blue sequin party hat to match.
I seat my dog before I even take the cake out. My Golden Retriever will literally launch herself onto the tray if she can sniff it out. Even a quick “stay” session the morning of, I just did for 10 minutes, can save the whole shot.
I love how she put stuffed animals around the rim of the tray. It’s fun and gives color to the picture and my dog won’t knock them over.

#9: The “Two La La” Parisian Birthday Spread That Stopped Everyone in the Café
And there was my puppy, sitting at a white marble table wearing a little pearl beret, surrounded by pink macarons and a custom cake and I swear if I had a dollar for every person with their phone out…
That is totally the energy that Hazel’s “Two La La” birthday setup was giving off. So doable.
Centerpiece is a pink fondant cake with hand-piped script, with Eiffel Tower sugar toppers on top. Inside a two-tiered gold cake stand. Next to the cake stand, there will be a glass cloche jar with more macarons, a tiny silver Eiffel Tower figurine, scattered dried pink roses, and a white mini teacup set.
For the cookies I ordered custom royal icing shortbreads that Hazel had her name, a camera and the Paris theme piped on. They came in a box in white with tissue paper that made the table look like a patisserie display.
Dress your pup in a gray wool felt beret (you can find them on Etsy for under $15) and tie a silk scarf loosely around their neck for that extra oomph.
The colours of the macarons can be important, so stick to blush, mauve or deep burgundy colours otherwise the one bright colour would ruin the whole mood.

#10: The “Smash Cake” Setup That’ll Make Your Dog’s Birthday Look Like a Pinterest Dream
I’m betting your golden already has the whole house wrapped around her paw. So when her birthday rolls around she deserves a moment that matches that energy.
In similar (and equally festive) shades of burlap, warm cream, and soft gold, this sweet set-up will have you wishing that every birthday was as festive as yours. From the burlap party hat on Chewie’s curly head to the personalized dog-safe smash cake on a white ceramic cake stand, every detail is perfectly cohesive.
I bought a “4” gold glitter number for the hat and a matching number cookie topper made from dog-safe peanut butter dough. Then, to add a cute touch to the front of the cake, I made a name cookie using a bone shaped name cookie cutter and piped the name in white royal icing.
If you’re throwing a party, one of my favorite ways to use numbers is on a balloon backdrop. For this one, I used a sage green number balloon in matte finish so it wouldn’t scream kid’s party.
Make it even easier: bake the smash cake using plain Greek yogurt frosting instead of whipped cream. It stays firmer a little longer during the photo session and doesn’t give your dog an upset tummy.
Keep the floor clear, as well as any other background. One clean wall can make your photos ten times better.

The One Thing Most Dog Birthday Parties Get Wrong (And How to Fix It)
I’ve planned probably a dozen dog birthday parties at this point, and I feel like the biggest mistake people always make is inviting too many dogs.
Six excited dogs in one backyard is adorable. It’s chaos. Chaos in the form of barking and someone crying.
I would suggest to keep the number of dogs to a maximum of three as they can get over stimulated easily and if that happens and your golden retriever knocks over the cake and spooks the smaller dogs then the party will be over in about twenty minutes!
A tip I didn’t learn until we started having kids is to plan your dog party around your dog’s nap time, not yours. Plan it right after their nap time. That way you know they are calm, but still playful. It’s a much better party.
Also, avoid the “human party food” entirely and create a menu of treats that are safe for dogs (you’d be surprised how great coconut oil makes for frosting! Here’s everything you need to know about using it safely for dogs).
Your golden will have the best birthday, and you’ll enjoy it.
Your Golden Deserves a Clean Home Too
This is not a decision to be taken lightly. You don’t have to choose between loving your dog and loving your space. Both can exist. Pick one product off this list and just try it.
The very first time that I used an enzymatic cleaner on my couch, I could not believe how much of a difference it made.
