My dog only sleeps 12 hours a day now. No more hallway pacing at 3 a.m. She’s gotten her own suite in the spare bedroom. Everything that Levi needs is in one 10×10 space.
The platform bed sits against the back wall. Three-inch memory foam fit perfectly. Sheer canopy drapes hang from a ring on the ceiling. The wooden sign above her name. Soft globe pendant. A bowl of water and a nightlight on a side table.
Storage shelves to the left, top basket hides grooming supplies, middle shelf is where I store my rolled blankets, bottom is toy bins, and the food container. Everything is organized so that I can have the leashes in 5 seconds.
The feeding station is right at floor level, and right next to the front door, so I don’t have to try and not trip on the bowls as I get to the door. I have two ceramic bowls on the waterproof mat, and have a drawer that pulls out from under the station for the bag of kibble. This set up works great for larger breeds who need space, but I would not suggest using for smaller dogs. There are many great breeds of small dogs though that are wonderful to have as pets!

For years, the area under my stairs was an empty triangle. Now, it’s a complete dog bedroom with sleeping zone, hidden crate, and grooming station.
The 6×4-foot wedge is just big enough for our medium-sized dog. The platform bed inside fits up against the back wall (where the ceiling is lowest). It creates a cave-like den that she loves. The white shiplap panels cover three walls and hide the angled ceiling. It looks like custom furniture from the hallway.
On the left side, we have a doubledogwire grey sliding-door cabinet that she hides in at night. I love that it’s vertical slats to allow air in (matches her decor) and she goes in willingly because it’s a cushion that’s like her bed at night. Top shelf stores folded blankets and her grooming supplies. I pull the blankets down for a quick brush at the door. The wall hooks hold her leash and harness so I’m not digging for them before walks. The small drawer below holds waste bags and treats. It’s all contained in 24 square feet.
Flooring: it’s sealed vinyl planks. Wipes clean in 30 seconds after muddy paws. The nice, soft gray tone hides the dirt between cleanings. The texture prevents sliding when she rushes in to greet us excitedly.

Daily maintenance takes 5 minutes. Wipe surfaces, toss toys in basket, close crate door. Weekly deep clean requires just one pet-safe shampoo spray and microfiber cloth for the walls.
Place a piece of paper under the stairs. Draw the outline of the under-stair triangle. For small breeds, the triangle only needs to be 3 feet by 3 feet.

The peach walls are just enough, not too overwhelming. And the white ceiling keeps it bright. The teal rug makes the sleeping area, and keeps the mud from the dog’s paws off the carpet. Just shake it outside in 2 minutes instead of vacuuming!
